Material Matters: Choosing the Right Finish for Bespoke Lighting

Not all finishes perform the same way — and the wrong choice can become obvious within months. Here is what goes into selecting the right surface treatment for a hospitality or residential lighting project.

Brass: The Workhorse

Brass is one of the most popular materials in custom hospitality lighting, and for good reason. It is corrosion-resistant, machines well, and develops a natural patina over time that many designers appreciate.

For clients who prefer a consistent look, a clear lacquer can lock in the original tone. Unlacquered brass will gradually darken — some projects embrace this, others do not.

Brushed brass: Matte, warm tone that works well in hotel lobbies, restaurants, and residential settings

Polished brass: More reflective and formal, but shows fingerprints and water spots more easily

Electroplating vs. Painting

This distinction matters more than most people realize when sourcing hotel lighting.

Electroplating bonds a thin metal layer (chrome, nickel, gold) to the brass surface — it is durable, scratch-resistant, and holds up well in humid environments.

Painted finishes, while more affordable, can chip or fade over time, especially in high-traffic or outdoor installations.

For hotel corridors, bathrooms, and coastal properties, electroplated finishes are almost always the safer choice.

Black Finishes: Not All Are Equal

Matte black has been trending in bespoke lighting for years, but the durability varies greatly.

Powder-coated black: Tough and chip-resistant — worth the extra cost for fixtures that will be touched frequently, such as wall sconces beside a hotel room door

Spray-painted black: Thinner and less durable — suitable for low-contact decorative pieces

Outdoor Lighting: Finish Requirements Change

Fixtures exposed to rain, salt air, or extreme UV need finishes that can withstand the elements. Stainless steel (304 or 316 grade), electroplated surfaces, and powder coating are the go-to options for outdoor hospitality lighting. Avoid painted or unlacquered finishes in these environments — they will degrade faster than the project timeline allows.

Aging and Patina

Some finishes are meant to look the same on day one and day one thousand. Others are expected to evolve.

Bronze, unlacquered brass, and copper all develop character over time. If the design intent requires a fixture to look identical for years, a protected finish is recommended — lacquered, electroplated, or clear-coated.

Our Approach

There is no default finish. Every project starts with questions:

- Where will it be installed — indoors or outdoors? - Is it a coastal, tropical, or climate-controlled environment? - Will people touch it frequently? - What is the expected lifespan of the fixture?

The answers determine the material and finish recommendation — not a catalog page.
